I was reminded of a medieval painting of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kensmen.com\/catholic\/saintsart.html\">saint<\/a> and was trying to find a  painting of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholic-forum.com\/saints\/saints03.htm\">St. Sebastian.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was wrong.  The closest example to the Cruise cover is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.observer.com\/themediamob\/2005\/08\/immature-magazines-borrow-mature.html\">cover of Esquire<\/a> done by ad legend George Lois.  It shows <del datetime=\"2005-08-24T22:31:2207:00\">Cassius Clay<\/del>  Mohammed Ali pierced by arrows exactly like the new Cruise cover.  (It was so long ago, 1968, I thought it was before Ali <a href=\"http:\/\/www.africanamericans.com\/MuhammadAli.htm\">changed his name<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>I have a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0810903733\">coffeetable book <\/a>of George Lois&#8217;s work too, but I try not to steal so directly.  In fact, the Ali image is on the spine of the dustjacket for Lois&#8217;s <em>The Art of Advertising<\/em>.
