{"id":48,"date":"2005-05-24T23:01:59","date_gmt":"2005-05-25T07:01:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.myadportfolio.com\/wordpress\/?p=48"},"modified":"2005-05-24T23:02:20","modified_gmt":"2005-05-25T07:02:20","slug":"pop-ups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.myadportfolio.com\/wordpress\/pop-ups\/","title":{"rendered":"Safire on Pop-up Ads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>William Safire, of <em>The New York Times<\/em> , has written an enlightening <a href=\"http:\/\/query.nytimes.com\/gst\/abstract.html?res=F30A17FA38590C758CDDAA0894DD404482&#038;incamp=archive:search\">little history<\/a> of pop-ups, both online and off.<\/p>\n<p>In it, he traces the pop-up ad back to children&#8217;s books of yesteryear as well real paper-and-glue pop-up print ads.The first mention he finds in the Times, is May 4th, 1967 when the Butler Manufacturing Company ran a pop-up ad in <em>Nations Business<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I thought it was rather limited of Mr. Safire to simply review references in his own newspaper.  But now I see why: Internet search engines do not know about print ads that pop up when the page is turned, only those pop-ups on the net.<\/p>\n<p>Safire finds another early use of  pop-up in describing the menus in Apple&#8217;s Lisa computer (Remember them? Think of a Macintosh&#8217;s &#8482; mom.)  John Markoff wrote of this in <em>InfoWorld<\/em> in July, 1983.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Rep. Markey of Massachusetts decried the use of pop-up ads on the Internet. He has introduced a bill called the &#8220;Securely Protect Yourself Against Cyber Trespass&#8221; act.  <\/p>\n<p>Why the bad translation sound?
